PARTNERSHIP

AICURA partners with Prof. Matthias Schroeter from the Max Planck Institute to revolutionize dementia diagnosis using deep-learning

December 5, 2023
We are thrilled to announce the expansion of our data x AI ecosystem by partnering with a leading research group in the field of neurodegenerative diseases. Through our value-based partnership with Prof. Matthias Schroeter from the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI CBS), we aim to address one of today’s most pressing healthcare challenges: the efficient and accurate diagnosis of dementia.

Our partnership aims to create a multi-modal deep-learning tool (TelDem tool) to analyze neuroimaging data, cognitive scores, and fluid biomarkers to classify and predict the progression of dementia syndromes. This tool can assist in diagnosing and determining the best treatment options for dementia patients. Its versatility enables it to be used in various healthcare settings, from specialized centers in urban areas to rural clinics that lack specialists. Furthermore, the TelDem tool holds the potential to facilitate the identification of the most suitable patient cohort for clinical trials evaluating novel treatments for dementia.

A major challenge faced by clinical researchers in Prof. Schroeter's group has been extracting valuable insights from fragmented, sparse, and poorly harmonized medical data from multiple organizations. The partnership with AICURA's innovative data x AI platform streamlines the process of accessing and curating clinical data, resulting in time savings of up to 70% across all data engineering workflows. Moreover, the AICURA platform equips clinical researchers with advanced machine-learning techniques that effectively handle complex multimodal, sparse, and incomplete medical datasets, yielding highly accurate prediction models.

Inspired by transformer-based model architectures that fueled the latest advancements of large language models, the TelDem tool will have the unique capability of integrating various data modalities like images, clinical scores or laboratory measurements while being able to handle missing or incomplete data without compromising diagnostic precision. This is particularly relevant in healthcare settings where the clinical decision process is based on multimodal information of patients, but the available data sets contain many missing data points.

AICURA is excited about the partnership's potential to enhance the team's expertise in neurodegenerative diseases (NDD) and optimize dementia syndrome diagnosis and treatment using its data x AI platform. The TelDem tool will be particularly impactful for remote clinics with scarce specialized resources and healthcare settings lacking full medical data. Through this partnership and the development of the TelDem tool, AICURA continues to pursue its mission to directly enhance patient care.
